Review by Nicholas J. Provenzano for The Training and Care of the Versatile Hunting Dog
Rating:
Book deals with the care and training of the “Versatile Hunting Dog. A “Versatile” dog is a dog that possess all of the hunting skills and will find, track and retrieve game. Written by very knowledgable authors who are authorities on Versatile dogs. It provides step by step methods to train a “pointing” dog breed and is helpful to the first time owner as well as experienced dog trainer. Book is often recommended by dog breeders and is well known to hunting dog enthusiasts. The contents are straight forward and to the point. In fact the authors state that it is “textbook and meant to train people to train their dogs”. Contains 12 chapters and covers Basic Behavior Training, Whoa ( aid to helping dog develop pointing instict), Pointing, Retrieving, Tracking Game, Seaching for Game, and Care of the Versatile Hunting Dog. It does not contain “hunting & super dog” stories. If you are serious about training your Versatile Hunting dog this book can be a great aid.
Review by Todd Chrisman for The Training and Care of the Versatile Hunting Dog
Rating:
Originally published in 1973, the “Green Book” (as it is affectionately called by NAVHDA members) is a very concise yet complete training method for training a versatile hunting dog. A versatile dog is one who points upland game and retrieves it on land and in the water. The concepts in this book have been used for over 30 years to train literally thousands of hunting dogs to very high levels of refinement. Numerous photographs and diagrams make it easy to grasp techniques that would be difficult to describe in words.
This book introduced the concept, revolutionary at the time, of the training table as a non-coercive method to get and hold the dog’s attention during training (and it’s easier on your back). Variations of the training table are common in many modern hunting dog training methods.
The Green Book was edited in 2001 to incorporate some modern, more informed training techniques. However, very little needed to be changed and the second edition remains faithful to the original. The Training and Care of the Versatile Hunting Dog is now on its 13th printing.
Chapters include: Introduction – History of the Versatile Hunting Dog, Purpose of this book, How to use this book. Chapter 1 – Training for behavior at home and walking at heel. Chapter 2 – Whoa and Come. Chapter 3 – Retrieving on Land. Chapter 4 – Retrieving from Water. Chapter 5 – Tracking. Chapter 6 – Sitting and Staying. Chapter 7 – Searching for Game. Chapter 8 – Pointing, Steady to Flush and Shot. Chapter 9 – The Down. Chapter 10 – Flushing on Command. Chapter 11 – Care of the Versatile Hunting Dog. Chapter 12 – Twelve Rules of Training. About the Authors.

Amy Shojai’s _Complete Care for Your Aging Dog_ is a fabulous book for all dog lovers. Not only is it a must-have reference — meticulously researched, easy to navigate, excellent examples — but it is filled with heart and soul and love, mirroring all the best characteristics of our beloved companion canines. This is a book written by someone who obviously *cares* about dogs and the people who share their lives with them; even if your dog is still young you’ll benefit by reading it. Ms. Shojai demystifies the aging process and her L.O.V.E. program for health validates and puts into practical terms the intuitive sense we often have that something is just “not right” with our companion. Throughout the book, Ms. Shojai emphasizes partnering with your dog’s veterinarian to help your dog realize optimum health and longevity. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

This updated, revised version of the award-winning book provides all the must-knows of caring for your mature canine. The aging process is defined, with great advice about how to manage dimming senses, and understand while making accomodations for your dog’s physical changes and emotional needs.
Step-by-step home care advice (pilling, fluid therapy, massage and more), insurance options, and help explaining to children the end-of-life issues are offered. The most common “old dog” issues (arthritis to cancer, deafness to heart and kidney failure, incontinence and obesity to reversing doggy senility) cover details about diagnosis, drug/nutritional/natural treatment options, and specialists to help owners are provided.
Unique to the Kindle edition, though, is an incredible value-added in the form of click-able “hot links” to online sources of dog care products, information, and the experts who were interviewed for the book. Bow-wow! My dog edited this book and gives it five paws up!
Review by Starry for Puppy Intensive Care: A Breeder’s Guide to Care of Newborn Puppies
Rating:
The lady that wrote this is an RN that has helped countless women deliver babies. She has since become a dog breeder and has now helped save lots of puppies. She not only tells you what equipment you need but will actually sell it to you herself for what I think is a pretty fair price. She even gives you her e-mail address so you can send her questions through her e-mail. This book comes with a DVD that brings to life what she teaches you how to do in the book. All in all this is the only book that has ever made me feel like I will know what to do when I have a crisis with newborn puppies. In the book this lady says you can reduce your mortality rate by 20%! That’s a lot! She says the average amount of puppies that die in infancy is 30% and that you can get it down to 10%. This book is so inexpensive that I think you can’t afford to NOT buy it.

If you breed dogs or are thinking of breeding your dog you need to know all of the emergencies that can occur in the middle of the night when no one or no Vet is available….this book will walk you through those problems…it is no nonsense from a gal (an Intensive care RN)that has been there and done that…it also has an informative…step by step… DVD to illustrate how to tube feed a pup and how to give sub Q fluids.
If it saves the life of even one pup…it was more than worth the price of the book.
We use it at our Hospital and recommend it.

This is the best text I have read in 30 years of dog breeding. Informative and written for the lay-man. The accompanying DVD was frosting on the cake. I would recommend this book for all dog breeders, regardless of experience.

This is so jampacked with helpful info and handy hints. Her nursing knowledge is obvious with her laid back approach to things that would generally make even the most experienced breeders nervous. The DVD that accompanies this book is invaluable also. The footage of tube feeding, and rehydrating puppies is second to none. She writes confidently and humerously, and explains quite tricky procedures quite simply. This book will help every breeder. The pictures, being photo’s are also extremely helpful.

Puppy Intensive Care: A Breeder’s Guide to Care of Newborn Puppies
I am an RN and also a dog breeder and I found this information essential. I especially like the organization and I could use it easily to make a shopping list of things I needed to add to my whelping area. I found most of the items by shopping Ebay for deals as suggested too. A must if you have fading puppy syndrome problems.
Review by J. Johnson for Complete Dog Care Manual (Aspca)
Rating:
This book was a great read for me the day before my wife and I picked up our dog from the kennel.
I read through the book within 2 hours and learned much about my new companion. I recommend this book on the grounds that it does allow the reader to understand things more from a dogs perspective. It deals mostly with health issues but the psychology of dogs is also touched upon, and the background of the species that is summarized is quite interesting.
If you have the extra cash to put towards buying this book it will be an okay purchase- you may find yourself, as I have, returning to the index in the event that your dog seems ill or acting strangely. However if you are not willing to pay the full price for the book you can easily spend an afternoon in a store reading through it. Any used copies available that are under $5.00 I would consider a smart purchase.
